Back from the Dead...

Hello to all my fellow Ultras...I have started to bring this blog back from the dead. I was very
busy in the past, but now will have time a few times a week to update this seeing as the site hasn't been updated in several months and still getting many, many hits a day.

So while I start collecting more interviews, watch for some good displays/action, and wait for the seasons to re-start in a few places, here are some pics from a recent Zrinjski Mostar v. Dinamo Zagreb friendly.

I want to apologize to everyone (and there are many of you) who read this blog on a regular basis, and have not had any updates for the past month. It has been a very busy month for me, and I have just not had the time to be as active as I was a few months ago.

That is all changing soon!

We will be getting a new url soon, as well as a new layout and daily updates, so stay tuned, more updates are on the way!

For now, I will post some videos that were sent to me from a Grêmio fan in Brazil....some truly fantastic videos!

Interview with Carl Robinson

So earlier this month, I was able to speak with Carl Robinson and he had agreed to speak to me about his past experiences with fans while both playing and watching football. Due to a very hectic recent schedule of matches, it took him some time to respond. With a very busy schedule it was great that he was able to answer these questions for me.

Carl Robinson currently plays as a Midfielder for Toronto FC, and earned 52 caps for Wales.

UATW: Growing up, what team did you follow? Can you describe to the readers what it was like to attend those games as a fan?

Carl Robinson: I supported Cardiff City as a boy. Went to watch a couple of times but not a lot as we could not afford to travel and pay for tickets every week. Watching it was unbelievable and it was so passionate.... thats why I play hard now as I grew up with nothing, so what I've got is from hard work and that will never change.

Being a Cardiff City fan, What was it like to watch games at one of the last stadiums to still have terracing?

Watching games in Ninian Park was great as we were all bunched into it standing shoulder to shoulder.....a real atmosphere.

What is the most memorable experience (whether a good or bad one) that you had at a match because of the fans you were with?

A bad one was when Cardiff played Swansea about 20 odd years ago.. supposed to be a friendly match but fighting broke out between 2 sets of fans. Women were throwing punches and everything. From that day on I knew what being a real fan meant to some people!

Were you part of a supporters group growing up? If so, what type of things did your group do to support the team?

I was not a part of a supporters group but always joined in with songs. I wrote a song for every player and that was my way of being a good fan!

You grew up in a period of time where "hooliganism" appeared to be at its height....how did that affect you while attending games?

Hooligans were a normal thing back then, but my dad always was with me so I knew if trouble happened he was with me. If a fight was going to happen, then my dad would be right in the mix.

You played for Wolverhampton Wanderers for six seasons. What were the fans like there?

Wolves fans were great, but if you were playing badly then they would let you know. Sometimes when you're not playing well you need help from the fans, but you did not get that there as they only got behind you when winning.

You also played for Portsmouth and Sunderland. What were the fans like at those teams?

Pompey fans were the best. They sing and sing and sing. Win or lose, they are right behind you. A great club to play for. Not as big as some of my others but real values to the club and their fans.

Sunderland were as passionate as they get. Always voiced there opinions but when we were winning then a great place to play. Had a burning hate for Newcastle!

When it was announced that Toronto was receiving an MLS franchise there were many critics in the media about how "soccer would be a failure here". Before playing your first match in the MLS with Toronto FC, what were your predetermined notions of fans in North America, particularly in relation to football?

People said that football would never and will never take off over here, but they are so wrong. I'm not saying it's going to be as big as NBA or NHL, but fan wise you'll never beat it. All stadiums should be football specific but the standard is getting better and better. Next change needs to be the wage cap to attract more quality to add to that already here.

What surprised you the most about Toronto FC supporters?

The passion and desire. Rain or shine, win or lose they are always there. And the knowledge amongst the fans here is great. A lot have said things too me that I thought only players might say, so they know there stuff!

Compared to Europe, how do the fans in Toronto stack up in comparison? What are the differences you see, and are their any similarities?

TFC fans remind me of English fans....loud, follow you everywhere and want to win at all costs. Fans here get behind you even if you are losing but over there they don't. Players need help sometimes and the fans can defo be our 12th man like they are here.

What match was the most intimidating you have ever played in because of the fans?

Probably the Wales v England games. Pure hatred amongst fans but respect between players. Scary atmosphere.

As a player, were there ever moments during your career that you ever felt you were in danger during a match because of how the fans were acting?

Fans can sometime change referees minds, and I've seen some refs buckle when home fans get right into them. You have to make your home stadium as intimidating as possible. This is key to being successful.

How important is it for the fans to sing for 90 minutes whether winning or losing? In your opinion can fans really be the 12th man?

Defo important. Fans are the 12th man.....people don't realise how big they can be but as a player, I do.

What impact does it have on you seeing smoke bombs and other effects being lit off by supporters of your team?

Great to see smoke and stuff everywhere.The more intimidating, the better. Banners, flags and songs are massive amongst players.

How much of an effect does it have on the team while on the road to see supporters travel with the team?

Traveling fans is important for the boys. When away you need some home comforts, and seeing the red army is a big help.

Has there ever been a tifo (display) put on by the fans while you were playing that left you awe-struck?

Yes at the Wales v Russia playoff game for Euro 2004. Horrible atmosphere in Russia, plus it was -15....We drew 0-0 but then lost 1-0 at home and missed out to qualify. Gutted!!!

Do you have any final words that you want to say to the supporters?

Keep supporting us like you do. You really are so important to us, and always remain passionate and sing your hearts out for the boys.

Ajax vs. Twente

I was able to get some translations from a free translations site for some of the banners. It was a protest by the Ajax Ultras in regards to their players not giving the same amount of support on the field as they do in the stands. After a certain amount of time during the game, the Ultras came rushing into the stands and began to sing, chant, and light off smoke bombs to show how much of a difference fans make at a game.

Banners that I translated have the quotes below the photos. The first few images were banners put up by the Ultras before the match as a message to the players.

"No pride * No honor. It is about money all the time."

"This Ajax is not worthy of support."

"We are Ajax.

"We are always here and everywhere for you! We lost. In villages where they do not hear the continued support, we roar inside which shows we are the only supporters. No pride, no honor, especially with money.

Today Ajax suffers its biggest defeat.

Inter Milan vs. Lazio / New Video of the Week

Here is a display at the recent Inter/Lazio match. The display was dedicated to Gabriele Sandri, a Lazio Ultra who was shot dead by police last year. This tragedy sparked nation-wide protests from Ultras all over Italy with riots breaking out all over the country.

For those not familiar with this tragedy, here is some information:

Gabriele Sandri, a well-known DJ from Rome and a Lazio supporter, was shot dead by the police this morning at a gas station in Badia al Pino, Arezzo. This followed an incident in which a group of Lazio ultras had attacked Juventus fans in their cars, the latter appealing for help from passing police; the shooting that followed is being reported by the media as accidental.

Today’s Lazio-Inter game has been postponed, and ultras are protesting throughout the country — rumours are circulating the internet wildly already, with claims that Sandri was shot multiple times. The Atalanta v Milan game was stopped due to fans breaking down a glass barrier, and Lazio fans have unfurled banners reading “Assassini, assassini” against the police. Many ultras are furious the rest of the day’s games were only delayed for fifteen minutes rather than cancelled altogether.

Southampton FC Pitch Invasion

There was a pitch invasion after Southampton FC were relegated after their loss to Burnley this past week. The club is being docked 10 points for the start of their new season next year. Southampton fans angry at the loss attacked the Burnley away support.

Not only do Southampton face the prospect of playing in the lower tiers with one hand tied behind their backs, but they could face an investigation by the Football Association into the ugly scenes that followed at the end.

Hundreds of Southampton fans ran to the end housing 2,000 Burnley fans, and a smoke canister was hurled. Amid this mayhem, Southampton's Paul Wotton was being treated after losing two front teeth. He was eventually able to walk off, but it was a sad ending to what had been a gutsy performance against the odds.

Southampton manager Mark Wotte said he was disappointed the invasion prevented his players from a lap of thanks to their long-suffering fans, but was proud of his players' response to a difficult period.

"I am proud of the way we went down," said Wotte. "I am sad we couldn't thank the fans because they have been fantastic and it is them who have been punished for something that isn't their fault."

There is a new law in Poland that if you set off a flare at a game you will go to prison for five years. A few clubs protested this new law with some displays this past week.

I came across this on one of the Ultras boards in Scotland. It's a Television show that focuses on police handling crowd's. After viewing it I was left with the feeling that the police were definitely being a little more polite to fans from both sides when they had a camera in their face for the duration of the match.

Many fans are very apprehensive about giving their details to police officers, although it's a very common thing to happen in Europe. If you refuse to give your details (Name, address, season card info), they can remove and ban you from the stadium, among other things.

How do you feel about cameras at matches, and this type of television show? Is it an invasion of privacy? Does it take things too far?

That's for you to decide. I'll explain my views about this to anyone who cares for a chat at the local pub or through emails on here, and I'd love to hear yours.

Incredible display put on by Green Brigade last weekend at their match with Aberdeen. The display is a type that seems to be growing more and more popular with groups lately because of the originality of it. They are far more complex then just using an over-head banner and usually require full participation from the section or else the display will end up looking like a disaster. On to the pictures:

Updated pictures from Red Star Belgrade / Partizan Derby

So I finally found the photos from the Red Star/Partizan derby with the pictures of R.S.B.'s display. I was reading different accounts of what had happened. R.S.B. ended up lighting several sections of seats on fire towards the end of the match while singing:

"It was a temple, and now the graves. Demolished and burned all, 1000 dead Grobars! We abolish it, we burned it, the craziest peoples in the world. The ultras of the Red Star!"

There were running battles inside the stadium with both sides trying to get to each other. At the 50th minute mark, Partizan made a large charge but were pushed back by police. Red Star Belgrade stole a large Partizan banner about 45 minutes after the match when 5-6 R.S.B. Ultras snuck through the stands to Partizan's section and stole the banner. Two more banners were stolen later on outside the stadium during various fights. Partizan was able to steal 2 flags from R.S.B. from what I've been told...but of course there will also be differing accounts of what happened after these matches.

Derby of Silesia: Piast Gliwice - Górnik Zabrze

Here are some photo's from the Piast / Górnik derby in Poland. Górnik Ultras were not allowed to enter the stadium and were forced to stand outside behind the walls for the match. The Ultras went around the stadium and stood behind the wall of the away section, and began to throw flares on to the field. They continued to sing and chant behind the wall while lighting flares to let their squad know they were there even though they couldn't be seen. There were a some stand-off's with the police but it appears there were no major incidents.

Monsters Larissa Club - Gate 1 Protest

This week, MS Gate 1 Ultras held a protest. The protest has to do with the countries new laws that are soon to be passed that severely clamp down on football fans. Over the past few years, there have been harsher penalties handed out to different fans for non-violent actions such as use of smoke bombs and flares, protest banners, and other things. The laws also will give it much harsher penalties for violence at the football games, but is very unclear with what it defines as violence.

During the protest, the group chanted slogans like "no jail will extinguish our voice" and "freedom for the fans".

Relying on web-based translators does not allow me to read the grrek sites very clearly, but I have been following the problems with police and fans in Greece for some time now. Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona

Below are the photo's from last night's displays from the group Schickeria (Bayern Munich). Some incredible displays with the confetti that was very well coordinated by the Capo's. Also noticed an ALERTA Network two-stick flag in the 4th photo. Below the photo is a video clip from the match with an excellent shot of the confetti right off the bat.

There was trouble before the match when Barcelona Ultras "Boixos Nois" attacked a Barcelona steward who was in Munich to help assist the Bayern Munich with identifying the BN Ultras before the match later that night. This is the story I cam across shortly after the match.

Barcelona Ultras Attack Club Security Guard In Munich.

A Barcelona security guard has been attacked in Munich by Barcelona's own ultras, known as the Boixos Nois.

Cadena Ser reports that around 20 followers of the extreme left-wing group were involved in the incident, which resulted in the guard suffering head injuries.

It is thought that the radicals are in Munich with the intention of going to the match, even though the club has told UEFA, Bayern Munich and the German police to identify them and to not let them into the stadium.

The incident is believed to have begun when the group descended upon the hotel on the outskirts of Munich, where the players and team are staying.

They then approached the security guards, recognisable by their orange jackets, and asked if they were at the hotel to protect Joan Laporta.

Straight afterwards, they attacked one of the guards and struck him the face, resulting in him suffering injuries.

A Barcelona spokesman is reported to have said that the ultras "have been able to obtain tickets to the game not through the club".

There will now be an attempt to hunt down the group and to ensure that they do not get into the stadium for the game later this evening.

Just as a side note, video of the week is updated. A quality video of Lech Poznań Ultras singing. The atmosphere is amazing when you consider they aren't allowed to bring in flags, smoke bombs, and other displays with them. Only their scarf's, shirts, and voices. I encourage people to watch this video from beginning to end.

Hillsborough 20th Anniversary

On April 15th 1989, 96 fans died at an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground. On April 15th 2009, The 20th Anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster took place and a memorial was held. Here are some of the photo's from the memorial. For those unfamilar with this tragedy can find more information about it here.

"Minutes seemed like hours, people still screaming, pleading, begging for help. I could see glimpses of the pitch, through the metal blue mesh of the fence, the beautifully green grass. Looking through the mesh it seemed as though I was looking at a television picture of the outside window, almost like looking through a viewfinder. Everything was in place in front of you, the other side of the fence but somehow you were detached from all this. Five foot in front of me was safety, the normal world where you could breathe normally not like a fish out of water. It had might as well been a thousand miles away. My brain kept telling my lungs to breathe but you couldn't." - A survivor from Pen 4.

I don't think there is anything else I could write about this that would do the fans justice.

Time to play everyone's favorite game "Spot The Crazy AEK Ultra!"

This fan takes the position of capo to an entire new level. You will never see anything like this at a basketball game in North America. I was told by some people that at half time in this game that all fans were removed from the stadium and the rest of the match was played behind closed doors. The crowd was becoming to rowdy for security to handle and a touch too threatening to the away team. Not sure if that is true or not, but would you be surprised after watching that clip?

And to keep on the subject of basketball Ultras, here are a couple quality videos from a recent match between Partizan and CSKA Moscow. It was the final match of the season:

Shamrock Rovers FC v.s Cork City

A couple pictures are already coming in from the SRFC Ultras. A very nice display of flags at a home match against Cork City a few hours ago (April 7th) that ended in a draw (1-1) . SRFC play in the FAI Premier Division in Ireland and are located in Dublin.

I'll post more pictures as I come across them.

A little late, bit it took me some time to find these photos. A young St. Etienne fan was hit by a car recently and was killed. There is quite a bit of controversy right now surrounding the event as many people are saying the young fan was intentionally hit by the car and feel the police are acting quite slowly on this. Crime tragedy 5 April 2009

Sunday 5 april 2009,
a terrible tragedy touched the group magic fans of Saint-Etienne. The great green family and Magic Fans are in mourning. The match ASSE - OM (5 april 2009) was dedicated to a young magic fan, Maxime, killed in the night from Saturday to Sunday by a car who hurt him brutally, probably voluntarily. Judicial inquiry is underway by the police of Saint-Etienne to find the person responsible for the murder. The Green players have worn a black armband and laid a wreath of flowers at the foot of the kop north.

Maxime was the official cameraman of magic fans group. 1 minute of silence was also observed in his memory.

As I am slowly going through the emails I have received from various groups about interviews, a question popped in to my head that I think would be an interesting one to ask:

What are your favorite types of displays?

Do you prefer to see the huge displays of cards that make out an incredible image that was meticulously planned by the groups, and executed just perfectly?

Or do you like the chaos of smoke bombs, flares, and a random assortment of two-sticks and flags seemingly thrown into the section to wave through the smoke and with no certain order?

Personally, I love both of them....but what good would this blog be if I didn't pick one over the other? So I went through quite a few photos of various tifo's from various games, and after thinking it over for some time, I found myself leaning on the side of chaos.

Watching the smoke fill the stands in different colors, being highlighted by some blinding flares and strobes, while others hold up some two sticks, throw some toilet paper/streamers, and wave different flags...pure magic. That's not to say I don't love the pure brilliance of seeing a large scale tifo come together of card displays and large over head banners. Think back to the massive Ajax card/over-head banner display a couple months back at the Ajax v. Feyenoord match...it was mental. (To see it, click here...watch in HQ.)

But even so, I still find myself preferring the smoke bombs and chaos. So I ask the readers this:

March was a very busy month with lots of excellent tifo’s from a wide variety of groups. It would take me quite a while to sit here and post all the ones deserving of posts, time I quite frankly don’t have. But what I am going to do, is post pictures and some clips of my favorites from the month of March. There are in no real particular order, and as the weeks go on I will post these on a weekly basis.

And just to give readers a heads up, expect some interviews very soon from the Green Brigade Ultras (Celtic) and an interview with the Torcida Plovdiv Ultras (CSKA Sofia). Both are promising to be very interesting interviews.

Alright, so here it is:

My first blog, and what a fitting subject for me to blog about. The Ultras scene is one I have been a fan of for quite some time now. Every few days I am looking all over the internet to find pictures, videos, and stories of what the other groups are doing around the world. As a Toronto FC fan myself, and a member of U-Sector, I understand the passion that people feel about the game.

The feeling of pulling off an incredible display for your beloved team.

The pain you feel watching your team lose.

The seemingly endless weeks before the season starts, how slowly each day passes before the Saturday when your Club plays, and the absolute joy of walking through the tunnel and into the stands.

So with this blog, I hope to capture the love, hatred, and pure passion of the Ultras scene, have some interviews with other groups, and just give fans a place to see what new displays have happened throughout the week.

As I have said, I'm not a journalist. I do this for fun. I do this because it's something I'm passionate about, and that's the only comfort I need or take from this. The first interview will hopefully be posted in a couple days, to be followed with another interview once a week. At the bottom of this page, you will find some videos of different Ultras groups around the world. Enjoy.
